Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reported today that the New York Yankees have signed first baseman Mat Gamel to a minor league contract. If that name looks familiar it is because he is the brother of Yankees prospect Ben Gamel.
Mat, 29, last played in the minor in 2011 with the Nashville Sounds and has some major league experience, playing parts of five seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 106 major league games he has 240 at bats, hitting .229 with 11 doubles, 2 triples and 6 homeruns. He owns a career .304 batting average in the minors. Throughout the last few seasons he has had multiple surgeries to repair injuries to his ACL.
Mat is likely heading to Triple-A where he will provide some extra depth at first base. It is expected that he will split time at the position with Yankees minor leaguer Kyle Roller for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
