The New York Yankees have signed left-handed pitcher Anthony Marzi to a minor league contract. Marzi, 22, pitched the last four years for the University of Connecticut Huskies where in four seasons he had a 15-22 record with a 3.13 ERA and 217 strikeouts in 299.1 innings pitched.
Marzi’s signing comes after working out in front of professional scouts at Port Chester, NY this past January. He possess a four-pitch arsenal that features a fastball that sits in the 88-90 MPH range and a sharp slider. He has a good feel for his secondary pitches and throws pounds the strike zone, keeping hitters off balance. He will go to Tampa to work out at the Yankees minor league complex before minor league spring training begins.
Look for Anthony to compete for a spot with one of the Yankees Class-A teams in 2015. He could find himself with the Charleston RiverDogs or with the Staten Island Yankees this season.
