Yankees Top Prospect #37 – Jeff Degano

With the 57th overall draft pick in the second round of the 2015 First-Year-Player Draft the New York Yankees selected left-handed pitcher Jeff Degano out of Indiana State.  Coming into the draft he was ranked as the 83rd best prospect by Baseball America, the 94th best prospect by MLB.com and the 54th best prospect by Keith Law.

Jeff pitched 3 games in 2013 for Indiana State before succumbing to Tommy John surgery that cost him most of that season and all of the 2014 season.  He bounced back in 2015 at 22 years old with an 8-3 record and a 2.36 ERA in 15 games for the Sycamores, striking out 126 batters in 99 innings pitched.

Degano signed with the Yankees on July 13, 2015 and immediately reported to the Yankees complex in Tampa to make his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Yankees.  In 6 games for the GCL Yankees 2 he threw 10 2/3 innings and struck out 8 batters, walking 4 and had an 0-4 record.  After his tune up he was promoted to the Staten Island Yankees on August 12, 2015.

With Staten Island Jeff faired a bit better earning a 2.53 ERA in 4 games, 2 starts, throwing 10 2/3 innings while striking out 14 batters.  After starting out in the rotation he would move into the bullpen to act as the piggyback for fellow 2015 pick James Kaprielian.

Degano made 2 appearances in the New York-Penn League playoffs out of the bullpen, throwing 2 1/3 innings and allowing just 1 run while striking out 2 batters.  With Staten Island he demonstrated good control of his fastball, a low-90s pitch that has topped out at 95 at times.  He followed it up with a changeup and curveball that proved devastating to left-handed hitters.

Jeff is likely heading to the Charleston RiverDogs to begin the 2016 season where he will be a regular part of their starting rotation.  He is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery but he did a good job shaking off any rust this season.
